Lucent Technologies appoints P&O Information Technology as independent software vendor
FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY DECEMBER 04, 1998.

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Lucent Technologies has appointed P&O Information Technology Sdn. Bhd. (POIT), a subsidiary of the KLSE publicly listed Pacific & Orient Group Berhad (POB), as an authorised Independent software vendor (ISV) under Lucent's Asia Pacific BusinessWorks™ Alliance Programme.

Under the ISV agreement, POIT will have the right to market, distribute and install the wide range of products for voice and data offered by Lucent Technologies. It initially will concentrate on call center solutions offered by Lucent in the local market and will provide a range of professional services to support these products.

Speaking today at the ISV agreement signing ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, POIT's chairman, Joseph J. Calaban, Jr., said the association with Lucent Technologies marked a new milestone on his company's path towards becoming a major player in the local IT industry.

The agreement, said Calaban, would accelerate POIT's efforts to broaden its horizons through the introduction of innovative products and valued-added services.

"This, in turn, will benefit Malaysian companies by improving their productivity, efficiency and competitiveness in the global market," he added. "I foresee an upward trend in future demand for high-speed networking technology and computer telephony integration."

The ISV agreement signing ceremony between POIT and Lucent was witnessed by Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister, Dato' Leo Moggie.

The agreement was signed by Calaban and Tunku Mu'tamir bin Tunku Tan Sri Mohamed on behalf of POIT, while Lucent was represented by John Winchester, president of Lucent's Business Communications Systems for Asia/Pacific and China region and Tom Cheong, managing director for South Asia.

"Through the ISV programme, Lucent is able to contribute to the development of call centre and computer telephony integration technologies in Malaysia. We are keen to transfer technical knowledge and innovation to Malaysians, raising even further the level of experience and expertise," said Lucent Technologies' BCS president for Asia/Pacific and China region, John Winchester.

Winchester also added that ISV members under the Lucent Alliance Programme play a key role in helping customers obtain complete solutions, including applications software. With software partners such as POIT, Lucent is also increasing and improving its products and services by offering and delivering complete, application-based solutions customised for Malaysian businesses.

According to Calaban, POIT's appointment as an authorised ISV of Lucent was a result of the combined expertise and resources of both companies in successfully completing the major upgrade project for P&O Insurance Co. Berhad's network, which utilises state-of-the-art networking and computer systems.

"We believe that our high-tech solutions will enhance developments of the local IT industry and complement the government's drive to achieve a knowledge-based industrial economy and an information-rich society," added Calaban.

Among the comprehensive range of consulting services offered by POIT are project management, network design and installation, computer telephony integration, risk management and other customised software development according to clients' requirements.

In keeping abreast of the latest technological advancements in the global market, POIT conducts its research and development activities through its New York-based subsidiary, Pacific Research and Development Corp. Ltd.

Lucent Technologies has operations throughout Asia/Pacific. In Malaysia, it employs approximately 300 people. Lucent is the 100th company to be awarded the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) Status and it is also represented on the MSC's International Advisory Panel.

Lucent, headquartered in Murray Hill, New Jersey, USA, designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronic components.
